As the title says. I love books where the end of it is nothing you would have expected. Any genre works! Here are some samples of books I have already read with shocking endings:
The Silent Patient
The Collective
The Girl On The Train
Gone Girl
The Obsession

I’m Thinking of Ending Things
The Boneclocks. It was like it was stabbing the very genre it was about in the back but in a wonderful, heartshattering way.
Tender is the Flesh ending was incredibly shocking
Birnam Wood by Eleanor Catton.
The Power by Naomi Alderman.
Deep Storm -Lincoln Child
Ethan Fromm
Bloodline by Jess Lourey made me yell “WTF WAS THAT?!” OUT LOUD.
Never before has a book done that.
Where the Basilisk dreams w. Michael Gear and Kathleen O’Neal Gear
Out of the Dark.
I promise if you don’t Google the ending you will not see it coming. You might even spend about half an hour staring at a wall and then posting about it in threads like this for the next five to ten years.
The book is a fairly stock alien invasion with a military pov. Until the end.
*Something Happened* by Joseph Heller – the author of *Catch-22* – has an utterly horrifying ending. It’s stayed with me for decades … And gets even more brutal every time I re-read the book. However, it’s not an easy read. It’s a billion miles removed from basically all of Heller’s other work. This isn’t to say it’s bad – it’s magnificent – but that it’s uncommercial and horribly disturbing.
*The Little House* by Philippa Gregory got me good.
Iain Banks- The Wasp Factory, and Use of Weapons
