Can anybody recommend a hard science fiction novel that takes place in a real historical setting?
So basically, like the part of Three Body Problem that happens during the Cultural Revolution, but…a whole book like that.

I don’t know anything about 3 Body Problem, but The Difference Engine by Bruce Sterling seems to fit the bill of “historical hard sf”
You might enjoy the works of Neal Stephenson, e.g. Cryptonomicon (part takes place in WWII) or the Baroque Cycle.
