The Mirror of the Sea by Joseph Conrad is a wonderful bit of nonfiction
Would he enjoy a non-fic memoir? Ellen MacArthur’s story of her lone sail around the world, Race Against Time, is gripping and fascinating.
While aimed at younger readers, the [Swallows and Amazons series](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swallows_and_Amazons_series) by **Arthur Ransome** is a classic for a reason, with quite a bit of sailing involved.
The [Horatio Hornblower series](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horatio_Hornblower) by **C. S. Forester** is very much about sailing, being set in the Napoleonic Era and following an officer in the Royal Navy
The **Safehold Saga** by **David Weber** is sci-fi, but for almost all of it, the technology is water-wheel/gunpowder level. The first book ^(Off Armageddon Reef) has a nation virtually abandoning the Galley (oared) fleet it has built in favour of a more heavily-armed Galleon (Sails) fleet to fend off an attack organised by the planetary church of Safehold and which sent the navies of five countries against it.
