I finished A Secret History about a month ago- no surprised was obsessed and wondered how I made it through my teens and early 20s without knowing this book. I’ve been on a reading kick this year and quickly picked up “The Little Friend” after. My nonstop reading came to a screeching halt. While she’s a gorgeous writer- there was too much crammed in this book. Finally… I couldn’t take it anymore… I read the ending- was instantly disappointed and now I’m mad at the time wasted with this book. I don’t need a mystery solved- but can’t we have some clues? Some possible suspects? I don’t know.., there was a lot to be said on the themes of grief, loneliness, loss of innocence, religious trauma, etc… but it’s like she kept every draft and edited zero out. It was like a monster cookie.
So is the Goldfinch worth it? My 14 year old is reading it currently and likes it- but I want an adult opinion.
