Hi, so first of all, English isnt my first language so it’s hard for me to exactly articulate what I mean by this.

Most military Sci-Fi is written by
american authors, John Ringo for example. I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with this, but a few common things keep sticking out to me when reading books by these american former military or military enthusiast authors:
Concerning the lore, the good guys are always either a republic or a government modelled after the same values as the United States today, or simply a military government.

The battles are described very good, but the characters are pretty one-dimensional (the tough sergeant, the new recruit, the veteran, the woman (lol)).

These are the things that stand out to me the most.
What I’m looking for is a military sci-fi book with rich characters and intergalactic politics with people that might have very different values, maybe an empire or a dictatorship or even some other form of state organization could be seen in a good or neutral light.
Space Operas are also ok as long as the battles are good.
I’d also love to see military ranks described differently, authors always use the US ranks.

I think the closest Ive come to reading a book similar to what I’m describing here would be the manticore series with Honour Harrington. The republic of Haven is the stereotypical “communist” bad guy here, but at the same time the Kingdom of manticore is a cool idea, the uniforms and traditions are well thought out and the navy is at least distinguishable from the US Navy. With many authors it is just the equivalent in space. The books also have some societal differences, like polygamy. The characters have different motivations and goals too.

I guess I hope there is something similar out there and someone can point me to it.
