Ok so I’m looking for your favorite books of any genre (except… maybe not horror) written by a woman, with a woman in the lead, and a strong romantic subplot. I do not want the romance to be the main plot, but I suppose that’s okay if theres another element to it that is just as important as the romance. I mainly read fantasy romance, but the romance is getting really predictable so I want to branch out to new genres and read a few books where romance isn’t the entire point of the story.
Ultimately, I’m hoping to find something to get lost in that’s not super predictable. So subverting tropes is a plus, but ultimately a compelling story that really just grabs you and sucks you in is the most important thing. Also, I’m hoping to find something that’s feminist in nature, but again, just being a compelling story that you get sucked into is the most important thing.
Some other things:
– Must have an audiobook
– I don’t like reading books set in space. So none of that.
– For the romantic subplot: no romanticized abuse or dubious consent at all, and I would prefer to avoid stories where he’s an asshole but she falls in love with him anyway. It’s fine if they’re horrible to eachother, just no “she’ll fix him. And if she doesn’t, she’ll put up with it because she loves him” bs.
– For the leading woman: I would prefer an older FMC (like 25+), and no NLOG’s.
– No babies or children. If the HEA includes the leading woman getting pregnant I will throw the book across the room.
– I’m very much over the “chosen one” or “secret heir to the throne” trope, so I would like to avoid that unless it’s done exceptionally well.
