I have enjoyed Gene Wolfe’s *Soldier of the Mist* and *Soldier of Arete* (more so than his *Soldier of Sidon*), and also the Gods and Monsters shared universe (comprising *Rupert Wong, Cannibal Chef*, *Rupert Wong and the Ends of the Earth* and *Last Supper Before Ragnarok* by Cassandra Khaw, *Unclean Spirits* by Chuck Wendig, *Mythbreaker* by Stephen Blackmoore, *Drag Hunt* by Pat Kelleher and *Snake Eyes* by Hillary Monahan).
In all of these works of historical or modern urban speculative fiction, the gods and pantheons are assumed to be real and not particularly benevolent.
