Example:
Humbert Humbert from Lolita
Winston 1984
Dorian Gray
Disgrace
Any other suggestions? I’d like to read about people who have very strong voice and unique personality that’s very strange but engaging. I don’t want to feel like the personality is very predictable or the character is easy to understand. I want to read someone I don’t understand and as we unravel more into their thoughts and ideas, the more engaging they appear.
For a movie/show equivalent, think strong personalities like L, Willy Wonka, Joker, Sherlock Holmes, Jack Sparrow. But something less theatrical/eccentric/comedic. What I mean is they have very strong distinct personalities that are hard to forget.
However, I don’t want to read a comedy so perhaps I picked bad examples. So please don’t pick something like discworld or hitchhikers guide to the galaxy.
I want a voice more grounded in believability/reality, but still heavily engaging like humbert humbert.
It’s especially important that their behavior isn’t too predictable. I want to be surprised the more I delve into their psych.

Many people have a hard time understanding him and hate him… As in people who read the book but also in universe I guess. There’s many damaged characters in literature but none quite like him.
