So I’ve decided to read as many books from the Disturbing Books Iceberg as possible. Why? Because why not.

I don’t think I was ready for how heartbreaking this book was.

Before anybody asks, no, I’ve never seen the movie it was adapted into. So I came in totally unprepared.

It took me a page or two to start decoding the dialect. Precious isn’t very literate at the start, so many words are spelled how they sound. But as Precious becomes educated, the book gets easier to read. Nice touch.

Man, and I thought the Dollanganger children from Flowers in the Attic had it rough. They’ve got nothing on Precious.

The hardest part of the book to read? The parts about Precious’s father. I literally can’t elaborate. It’s too painful to talk about.

I can’t remember the last time I wanted to give a fictional character a hug. This poor, sweet girl just needed someone to help her. I love how her classmates and teacher actually treat her like a human being.

Do you think this book was disturbing?
