We all know Virginia Woolf, John Berryman, and David Foster Wallace were pretty smart but the problem is they killed themselves. How about some recs for authors who didn’t
Thats the most pathetic req i ever saw here, and they were many.

The overwhelming majority of authors do not die by suicide. Can you be a bit more specific what you want from us, or what you are trying to avoid? The list of smart author who didn’t die by suicide is going to be way, way too long to feasibly put in a comment here. It would be easier to list authors who did die by suicide and then you know to avoid them, such as James Tiptree Jr. who did a murder suicide with her husband when they were both extremely old and in poor health.
I *would* recommend The Continuous Katherine Mortenhoe by D. G. Compton which has incredible prose, but unfortunately [I don’t know how the author died.](https://locusmag.com/2023/11/d-g-compton-1930-2023/) Also if you’re wanting to avoid any references to suicide or suicidal ideation, then you wouldn’t want to read The Continuous Katherine Mortenhoe.

Do you want ones who still could, or do you want ones who definitely won’t because they already died of something else?

The fact that they chose suicide is a problem for you? Comes off as a diminishing and selfish opinion.

Sylvia Plath is spinning in her grave over this question. She was very smart and an overachiever.

“If you’re so smart, why aren’t you happy?”
