    1. Haruki Murakami has some pretty good ones like Norwegian Wood or 1Q84, very easy to read and fairly unique as well

      Here are some:

[Nothing to See Here](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/49086091) by Kevin Wilson

[Killers of the Flower Moon](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/35954609) by David Grann (nonfiction about Osage Indians – movie adaption coming out in a couple days!)

[Siddhartha](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/52036) be Hermann Hesse (imo a better alternative to The Alchemist)

      [Almond](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/52219386) by Sohn Won-Pyung

    3. I find things by Ted Chiang to be kind of similar to The Alchemist. However, he hasn’t written any novels, only short stories and novellas. They’re all great, though. There are some [available free online, legally.](https://www.freesfonline.net/authors/Ted_Chiang.html)

As for tracking which books are popular, I browse lots of book lists such as Bookriot or Goodreads. I don’t typically read brand new books, I wait and see if they have staying power or if I still think they sound cool after mulling it over for a while. But just looking at these lists will give you a sense of what new books people talk about. My local library also has a website where they have lists including popular new releases.
