The first step towards “classic” status is that the book remains in print—and commonly read—**after** its initial splash on the market (sometimes, but not always aided by a TV or movie adaptation).
I’m talking about “modern classics” such as “Blood Meridian”, “The Handmaid’s Tale”, or the Harry Potter series. It’s not unlikely that these books will pass the test of time and be regarded as “classics”.
