I’ve always really enjoyed Hunter S. Thompson’s way of describing things. So I am curious what authors or books do you find comparable?

Here is a classic example of what I’m referring to from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas:
“So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark—that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back”

    or

“There he goes. One of God’s own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.”

I’m not really concerned about same subject matter but really looking for comparable styling. It can be in fiction or non-fiction, gonzo or non- gonzo.
