My significant other said he’d read or listen to a book for me so we can discuss it. Long story short, I watch his TV shows with him even though I don’t otherwise watch tv / pay attention to sports. So he wants to make more of an effort with my interests.
Problem = he doesn’t read. His words years ago when I asked what books he likes.
He’s willing to read / listen to a bok/audiobook, but requests it be short. Wouldn’t give me any guidelines on genre but semi-joked about a short story being preferable.
So suggestions please for an engaging, shorter book that may interest a 48 year old male non-reader please.

I always recommend “Vicious” by VE Schwab to adult men. It is a fantasy that’s easy to read about two best friends with powers, one of them ends up in prison, 10 years later he escaped and is looking for his ex bestie for revenge. It’s such a good morally dark read.

Holes by Louis Sachar! It appeals to all ages, has really short chapters, and is super engaging. And if he does end up enjoying it, you guys can watch the excellent movie adaptation together afterwards 🙂

Kaiju Preservation Society is 264 pages and feels shorter … if he likes Godzilla / Jurassic Park. Empress of Salt and Fortune is 119 pages, kind of asian fable. The Things They Carried is 223 – a war book (vietnam).

Tons of short story creations out there….some collections by asinine author, others muti author anthologies, often with a theme

    5. A story collection by George Saunders might provide things for both you to talk about. Take the stories one at a time. “Tenth of December” or “Civilwarland in Bad Decline”.

“A Simple Plan” by Scott Smith. It’s
not super short but it’s an easy read and a page turner.
