I am trying to read books from first time, new or non franchise stuff. I got into a rut of reading books just because they were on a best seller list and think sometimes doing that I am missing out on finding new witers.
I just read a novella I randomly bought and I enjoyed it. It was just a straight forward story and it was a nice read.
Forever Lost at Sea: Ryujin Rising by A Houvouras and S Hutchins, and wondering if anyone can recommend books that are also overlooked as not ‘mainstream popular authors

Nevermoor series by Jessica Townsend. It’s an ongoing series that not many people know of. At least that’s what it feels like. There’s currently three books in the series and a fourth one is coming maybe this year
And there’s tons of great works written 10, 20, 30+ years ago that never even came close to making any sort of “best seller” list. I avoid current popular best seller books, anyway. Very few interest me even a little.
You’re on the right track. Buy what interests you, even if it’s a long shot. Read what YOU like. You find an obscure work from an obscure author that you thoroughly enjoyed? You did good. Maybe seek out more. Never mind what’s “popular because it’s popular” due to excellent marketing.
Amazon is pretty good at selecting a given title, no matter how obscure, and displaying other results that are similar in subject and style.
Someone needs to create a “random book suggestion” utility that offers up a truly random book. I would plug in maybe 5 different genres and published greater than 20 years ago and I could satisfy my book desires for the rest of my life. I might pass on many [after reading the synopsis] but not all.
If you’re open to very long books, I highly recommend [The Hands of the Emperor](https://app.thestorygraph.com/books/af2bba9c-8f41-4a3e-b87a-8532a44ccb67) by Victoria Goddard! It’s a beautifully written slice of life book about the personal secretary to the emperor of the world, with a heavy focus on platonic relationships.
