So now I have finally gotten to read and finish one of the best known novels written by the late Cormac McCarthy, “The Road.
Along the road of a Scorched America a father and son walk alone. Nothing in the ravaged and burned lands, save only for the ash that is blown along by the wind. So cold that the stones crack, and whenever the snow falls it is always gray. And the sky is completely dark.
The destination that they are heading for is the coast. The two have nothing, just only a pistol that they use to defend themselves of the bands of Marauders that stalk along the road they are on, the very clothes that they wear, and a cart full of scavenged food. And also each other.
McCarthy’s 2006 novel takes a popular trope, a post apocalyptic world, and gives it a much darker twist. This post apocalyptic world is much more bleaker, a world where no hope remains, save for the love and tenderness between the father and son. The reasons for the destruction of the world is never explained it does certainly leave many to conjecture what it might possibly be.
This is one of McCarthy’s most well known works along with his other novels like “Blood Meridian” and “No Country For Old Men”. While some may not like the depressing and bleak atmosphere or even the writing boring, this is a really tremendous kind of a book!

I liked the movie but it didn’t come close to portraying the atmosphere of the book.
Started out a bit slow for me but picked up mid way with more “set-pieces” – the house, the bunker, the ship etc.
I also like The Children of Men movie and The Last of Us video game which have the adult accompanying kid in a future dystopia scenario.
