Help me with finding modern war fiction

Need help here folks, my current target interests are fairly specific and am having a REALLY hard time finding anything to read.

I’m looking for a few things;
– modern warfare setting (ok I’ll open that up to 1980 – 2040~ so I guess late cold war era to near future)
– doesn’t HAVE to be WW3, or cold war gone hot or anything
– NOT post apocalyptic (I really don’t like post apocalyptic setting)/zombie (really don’t like zombies)
– not espionage (such an overdone theme) not Navy Seals/special forces save the day because they’re supermen.
– follows either a specific character(s) or a unit through the conflict
– ideally is a series

Basically just a modernish war setting that follows a character or a set of characters on the frontlines.
I have had a lot of success finding books that satisfy these requirements but in a scifi setting no problem. Books like the War’s Edge series, Undying mercenaries etc. However I can’t seem to find them in my chosen setting
