He loves trains, buses, and maps. Is there a book we can read together that might capture his attention? Off the top of my head Around the World in 80 Days features lots of different modes of transportation…

Maybe The Phantom Tollbooth? There’s a lot of traveling in Milo’s little car from one place to another.
Richard Scarry has some books like that. They may be too young, but it may spark the joy of reading again.
*The Pushcart War* by Jean Merrill. It’s about pushcart owners getting bullied by truck drivers and how they band together.
I know that they are traveling all over the world in The 39 Clues and it’s a lot of fun. It’s been a while since I read them, so I can’t remember if they really focus on the transportation part of it or not.
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is a kid’s book by Ian Fleming about a family who has a flying car, and some sequels have also been written by another author. The movie is fun too!

Google has also suggested a series of books beginning with The Highland Falcon Thief – they’re described as ‘middle grade train adventures’.
And perhaps you could try some nonfiction, if fiction isn’t capturing his interest right now? I loved Horrible Histories at his age, and I can see there’s a fairly new one called [Right On Track](https://www.amazon.co.uk/Right-Track-Horrible-Histories-Railways/dp/0702312355) that explores the history of rail travel.
