I just finished ‘Swamplandia!’ by Karen Russel and gosh I did not like it…
There is some build up to the harsher parts of the novel, but the absolute tonal shift in the latter half of the book is shocking. It goes from a bizarre and gently fun story about a swamp family to a deep, dark tragedy. And if you think the ending wraps this up in a bittersweet and meaningful way, you’d be wrong. I did not want to finish this book but made myself cause I stupidly thought the ending would somehow make everything make sense.
I get how someone else could enjoy it, but it was probably my least favorite read ever.
What’s your least favorite book you’ve read?

For 2024, my least favourite is The Silent Patient. Was too overhyped for a mediocre plot twist.
The Power of One. 300 pages too long and tries to trick you into thinking it was good with a simple finale showdown. Worst book I was ever assigned in school and hasn’t been usurped since.
The ocean at the end of the lane
I never read a book I hate for more than a chapter, unless there is something there that I need to learn from or an interesting bit of information/style, so I usually havent read many shitty books.
There is one exception: The Vampire Academy Saga. I read it in college because I lost a bet with my friend who loves the series. I hated every second of it.
Zone One by Colton Whitehead. What the *fuck* was he thinking with that?
A Thousand Boy Kisses
Anna and the French Kisses
….too cringy 🤮
Vanishing Girls by Lisa Regan
I really disliked the main character and the writing. Gave up at around 35%
The Stranger by Camus. One big pity party.
