Fiction:
– The Hands of the Emperor by Victoria Goddard (it has a sequel, but you can just read the first book if you prefer)— It’s a (very long) beautifully written slice of life book about the personal secretary to the emperor of the world, with a heavy focus on platonic relationships.
– A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith
– The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna
– Holes by Louis Sachar
Nonfiction:
– Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott
– How the Internet Happened by Brian McCullough

So leaving out series, I’m cutting out a ton of my faves. But, these are some stand outs
1. Eye of the World, Robert Jordan (Wheel of Time Book I, works as a standalone)
1. Dune, Frank Herbert (Works as a standalone)
2. The Lord of the Rings, One Volume Edition, JRR Tolkien (the way it was meant to be read)
In No Particular Order:
Atlas Shrugged, Ayn Rand (I have no idea why I like her writing so much, but FSM help me, I do)
Fairy Tale, Stephen King
Red Rising, Pierce Brown (works as a standalone)
Island of the Blue Dolphins, Scott O’Dell
The Fountainhead, Ayn Rand…(it’s got to be the free-thinking part,)
And Then There Were None, Agatha Christie (aka Ten Little (racial slurs here)).
Bet Me, Jennifer Crusie, just a sweet, classic love story.
