I’ve been watching Shogun and I’m enjoying it, but the Game of Thrones comparison doesn’t stick for me because there’s a much smaller range of characters despite the epic scope. I’d like to know how the war affects people not in power in Japanese culture, like an average soldier or people who live in a village at the lowest rungs of society. Or how they slowly transition from one to the other and fall in and out of each other’s orbit.
Bonus points if it’s fantasy in some way. I love the world in Sekiro, as a reference.

Musashi sounds like the book for you. Many characters in all types of classes and levels. The main core of characters ebb and flow within these parameters! Phenomenal read
Did you read shogun? It’s an amazing book.
