Any one in this sub much of a reader of books from the golden age of hard boiled detective/crime fiction, ie the 30’s, 40’s, 50’s, 60’s (to an extent)? If so what are some of your favourite writers or books of the time?

I’m not looking for answers of books written in modern times, particular with a modern view to “deconstructing” the era and it’s ills or judging it’s views/society morally from todays standards, just the real thing.

Anyway, my favourite writer of individual stories of the time is Mickey Spillane. I know some of his time laughed at him and thought of Chandler as the superior writer – but I honestly find his world building and character writing far more interesting and mysterious, he really lets you live in the open world scenario in his books. Having said that it’s very true that after reading a few books of his, you’ll be able to pick the killer instantly (always the person you should least suspect), but those first few where you don’t know his style yet were supremely enjoyable for me.
