Looking for a fabulous (interesting) book about the journey people took when they headed out west. Like how they got from one place to another. Was it scary to travel through the desert not knowing where you were going? How did they provide for themselves during that long journey?
The reason I ask — I live in Kingman, Arizona. We were traveling today from one western city to another and I got to thinking about how it was with no roads. They just had horses and buggies. I can imagine a lot of people probably died. Any good stories or books?
Thanks in advance!

The Quick and The Dead by Louis L’Amour might be a good choice. About a man moving his family West, and his concerns for his family during the process. I’m of the understanding that L’Amour wrote other Westerns as well, but this is the only one I’ve read so far.
