We’ve all heard of (or experienced) the “men writing women” phenomenon. It’s fun to see and poke fun at when a dude cannot, for the life of him, write a believable woman character. Or even a caricature of one that isn’t just brazenly misogynistic.

While it’s certainly easier to spot, I was wondering what examples you’ve spotted of someone trying to write characters of a group that they just DO NOT understand or even bothered to research. Y’know, besides men writing women.

Easiest example is women writing men. While I haven’t read Zodiac Academy, my friend reads quotes to me quite often. She won’t stop. I am convinced that the authors of that series have not talked to a boy past middle school. It’s… Jesus, if you know, you know.

There’s also the ever wonderful straights writing gays (or insert LGBT+ identity to butcher). I’ve already made a lengthy post about how lazy I think Sarah J. Maas is but her attempt at representation in ACOTAR is basically a hate crime.

Anyway, what examples of “blank writing blank” have you experienced? Men writing women is more than welcome but let’s see if we can get more perspectives!

I don’t read the genre this is in myself, but I have heard A LOT about what I would consider to be called vanilla writing bdsm lol

I think the most egregious version of this is straights who have never done any butt stuff/researched doing butt stuff writing a gay sex scene. Thankfully this isn’t as common in published fiction anymore, but good heavens when mistakes are made…

    3. Brits writing guns.

“He pulled the trigger until the magazine was empty” on a bolt-action rifle.

357 mm Magnum revolvers. 7.62 inch caliber rifle.

      It’s a small thing, I realize that.
