Hey,
This request might sound a bit “specific”, but I’ll try anyway. I’m looking for a bildungsroman novel, which preferably follows a character from his/her early years (no gender preference), either Fantasy or Historical (if it has magic, it’s a big plus). I’m not really looking for “power fantasy” per se, but I’m interested in reading about someone progressing through the social/hierarchical ladder, especially in the army.
For context, I was reading the Armour of Light (Ken Follett), >!and realised that the moments I preferred were when the novel focused on the “child destined to great ambitions” (Kit, for those who read it). !<
I’m looking forward to your suggestions! Feel free to ask for further specification, if necessary.

I accidentally ended up setting the whole post as a spoiler, but don’t mind it. Sorry 🙁
Red Rising (dystopian)
Babel by RF Kuang (historical fantasy?)
The Murmur of Bees
Washington Black
Demon Copperhead
You’re gonna *love* She Who Became the Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan. I didn’t like the sequel as much but this book is your description to a T.
Edit: Peasant girl takes her brother’s place at a Buddhist monastery and ascends the ranks of an armed rebellion in slightly magical/fictionalised 14th c China.
The City Watch books, Terry Pratchett
