Hi all! I’d love to hear input/opinions. I’m doing book exchange with a friend and want to either read and annotate A Secret History by Donna Tartt or A Certain Hunger by Chelsea G. Summers. I haven’t read either book yet, so I’m hoping to get some input on what might be a better pick!

My impression is that Secret History is pretty popular, big dark academia vibes, but a bit of a denser read. It seems like Certain Hunger is an easier read, more comedic maybe, and definitely shorter.

My friend that I’m gifting to is a bit more of a casual reader (newer to a reading hobby, reads maybe 10 books a year, goes through books more slowly), so the length of Secret History is my biggest concern. But reviews for Certain Hunger aren’t as good. She is into drama, romance, and mystery/thrillers.

If anyone has read both books, which is your favorite? Do you have any thoughts on which might be better for a casual reader? Pros and cons? I’d highly appreciate any insights anyone has!

Secret History isn’t a difficult read, and that’s what makes it great, like Dickens. You can read it at a superficial level, or you can see the underlying themes and messages etc.I read it flying London to LA, so not masssively long once you are into it I would think?

Not read the other book, but highly recommend The Secret History
