In the last few years I’ve fallen in love with Historical Adventure. It started with Dumas, whom I utterly love. It branched out into piratical fiction like Treasure Island and Captain Blood. A lot of short stories by Sabatini. Some Dumas pastiche by H. Bedford Jones. Some (fantastic) Dumas homage by Arturo Perez-Revert. Some great adventures by Harold Lamb.

Point being, I eat it up. I’d like not to limit myself to Europe, and European authors though. I was wondering what I’m missing out on by authors from other cultures, writing adventures in their history. I read and adored Eiji Yoshikawa’s Musashi and I plan to read Taiko soon (after I finish reading Clavell’s amazing Shogun). I also read the recent translation of Jin Yong’s Legend of the Condor Heroes, though its depiction of martial arts leans quite fantastical, though I dont mind depictions of the supernatural.

Are there any other similarly toned Historical Adventures from other cultures I’m missing out on? I’m particularly drawn to pre-industrial eras and a swashbuckling vibe. I’d love to know if there are any from the Middle East or from India. I read Haddawy’s Arabian Nights and while it’s not quite what I’m looking for, I found it pretty interesting.

tl;dr, Any good historical adventure fiction by non-western authors in non-western settings?
