And the writing was beautiful. So many times I found myself wanting to yell through the book “Stevens! You dense mfer!”
Ishiguro succeeding in showing us a character that makes the most frustrating decisions while also giving us an incredible amount of depth as to his reasoning. Why he let’s himself be embarrassed by Lord Darlington’s guests, why he let so many key moments of his life pass him by in the name of duty and “dignity”, and yet somehow we’re left with a glimmer of optimism he decides he wants to learn to banter and not waste what’s left.
Jesus, what what a great book.

One of my favourites. That whole sequence where he’s managing the big soirée while his father is ill upstairs was sublime.
