I used to be an avid reader as a teenager then I stopped for some reason during high school and didn’t pick up reading till the pandemic happened. Since then I’ve been reading mostly Romance, a bit of West African literary fiction here and there and currently I’m exploring thrillers via audiobooks.
After 3 years and a lot of romance books later, I’m getting bored. I find that I now get overly annoyed with the writing in romance books especially when it’s contemporary and I can only listen to thrillers to enjoy it. So I think I change is needed. I explored a couple of literary fiction books this year and I’ve actually liked them. I want to develop my writing skills too hence the title.
So I need book suggestions that meet these criteria’s
– literary fiction
– academic (what I mean by this is something that might be read by a English/literature major for like an analysis/paper. I did something like this in one of my English courses in college and I loved it. My professor praised me for the paper (almost pick up an English minor😀 then)
– Not boring or too long (anything more than a thousand pages is overkill)
– great plot and storytelling.
– please no YA books. I find that I get easily annoyed at teenage characters.
– No West African literary fiction. I have a lot of them in my too read pile that I’m yet to finish. I’m working my way through them slowly. There’s usually a lot of trauma and triggering plots that are relatable to me in these books. I read to escape real life. I want happy go lucky books.(not necessarily lol but just not as tragic as WA literary fiction tends to be)

I’ll suggest *The Poisonwood Bible* by Barbara Kingsolver. Or you could try her recent *Demon Copperhead*.
