Professor Dowell’s Head by Alexander Belyaev, a fun horror classic about an insane surgeon and his kooky experiments. The violence is cartoonish, and there’s no gore or sex. It’s also short and fast-paced.

Robert Muchamore: the Recruit and all the other Cherub books

Loved the Red Necklace by Sally Gardner. It’s historical fiction but the history doesn’t get in the way of the plot and enhances it instead of getting in the way. It also inspired me to read other historical fiction.

My grandsons are in that age group, one on each end. They both loved Project Hail Mary and Artemis.
