I’ve been a bit of a sucker for Tom Clancy for the past 2 years and now I’m onto his penultimate novel. Locked On.
Personally I love this book, it’s much more entertaining than the last one (dead or alive). It kept me entertained, the plot threads made sense and made you feel the stakes and finally I can see my guy Jack Ryan Jr get a girlfriend.
But there are plenty of issues. This doesn’t feel like a Tom Clancy novel, the technical detail present in all the past books doesn’t appear anymore. A complaint I’ve had for all of the Tom Clancy books from teeth of the tiger onward is that the continuity feels wrong. It makes me feel like all the previous books and all the sacrifices made by Jack Ryan Sr were for nothing. Now the continuity issues here are much less pronounced but it makes issues out of things that we’ve seen in the past can be solved easily enough.
Now we are heading into spoiler territory so continue at your own risk
The book tries to cover the nuclear issue by saying the nuke couldn’t be shot down because SAMs are too short range but in the past it’s been established that missile defence systems can and that Moscow had a lot of defence systems around the city.
Who is Melanie speaking to? Alden’s in jail. At the same time ‘just a look’ isn’t much.
