Percy Jackson and the Olympians/Heroes of Olympus series by Rick Riordan
Nevermoor series by Jessica Townsend
Notes from the Dog by Gary Paulsen
Lockwood and Co series by Johnathan Stroud
Simon Sort of Says by Erin Bow (CW: this is about a 7th grader who survived a school shooting, the book is funny and lighthearted, but also deals with trauma, grief, anxiety, etc and might not be right for all young readers.)

Darren Shan – vampire series. Starts with “cirque du freak” (My all time favourites, these are what
got me into reading)
Garth nix – Old kingdom series
Garth nix – The keys to the kingdom series – Starts with Mister Monday
David Eddings – Belgariad Series

I was super into Stephen King and Anne Rice at that age. Joe Hill is about the same speed as his dad if you want something more recent.

When I was precocious and that age, I absolutely ate up all of the Ender’s Game books, Redwall, and Neil Gaiman’s Graveyard Book. My students around that age love Neal Shusterman’s Scythe books and I’m always pushing China Mieville’s Railsea and Un Lun Dun. Jacqueline Woodson and Jason Reynolds are good if he wants a little more grounding. Sharon Creech. Andrew Clements writes super-good little school-based potboilers. Terry Pratchett. Chasing Vermeer.
