Cotton Candy Massacre by Christopher Robertson was my first horror book and it felt like the perfect book to get me into it! Still had gore and horror themes but it also felt really approachable and was so fun to read. After that book I felt like I could go into the genre deeper!
Plus there’s a second book to it and a third being written right now!

We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson — good starter book IMO

I would start with a smaller book first- Carrie by Stephen King is genuinely incredible, and if you want to keep going with him on a longer book I suggest Under The Dome and The Outsider. Those both have paranormal elements. If that’s not your thing then Misery by him I’ve heard is also pretty good.
If you like classics and older style of writing then The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson is right up your alley.
Penpal by Dathan Auerbach was genuinely terrifying.
A Head Full of Ghosts by Paul Tremblay is another favorite.
There are so many horror subgenres!! It really depends on what you’re more interested in

where would you rate on a scale of what scares you based off horror films. Like do you think the exorcist is the scariest thing you have ever read and get nightmares? did you think annebell the first movie was scary? would you consider something with more sci fi to the horror? give us a nice gage so i dont give you something not scary for you or something too scary
