I want to read a fantasy book without getting completely confused, but will help me kinda dip my toes into the fantasy pool. So maybe low stakes, a little romance to keep me engaged, and an easy to understand world. It doesn’t have to be exactly this, but something along those lines. (I’m open to any book!) Also if you just have any tips to keep me engaged in a fantasy book that would be great too!

    1. I’m real particular with what I like in terms of fantasy and I absolutely loved Octavia Butler’s *Kindred.* The fantasy element is time travel but there’s also a strong 1st person narrative combined with historical fiction and a bit of nostalgia (it was written in the 70s…yes, I’m old) which, together, hooked me straight from the get go. I know others prefer Butler’s *Parable of the Sower* and I enjoyed it, too, but Kindred will forever have a permanent place at the top of my heart.

    2. How about an oldie but a goodie calls a wizard of earthsea by Ursula Le guin. This is a young adult book by the master of fiction herself so it is still an excellent book for all ages all of these years and it’s a great place to dip your toes into fantasy and see some of the things that it can do.

Also, I know that there is a studio Ghibli film of the same name but it was truly botched and combines elements from many books together in a hodgepodge of not good storytelling and Miyazaki had some really bad fights with his son who was producing this film over it.

    3. If you’re looking to dip your toe in, you really can’t go wrong with most of the works of Neil Gaiman.

Star Dust is marketed as a Fairy Tale for Adults and has an AMAZING adaptation.

Neverwhere is like a modern twisted Alice in Wonderland.

The Ocean at the End of the Lane is a really stirring novella that will give you some creepy vibes for the season.

Other authors to consider are Brandon Sanderson (mentioned above), VE Schwab (Shades of Magic series), Guy Gavriel Kay (He has several standalones), Evan Winter (Rage of Dragons), RF Kuang (Poppy War is VERY DARK so I would check out trigger warnings beforehand and I have not read Babel), Fonda Lee (Jade City) and for something completely different Jeff Smith’s Bone Series.

      Happy reading!
