I love the post-apocalyptic genre and had very high hopes for the book, especially as a National Book Award Finalist. I decided it would be a fun experiment to read along as I watched the show since I’ve never tried that before. At first I didn’t mind that things happened out of order because that’s common. Then I started to wonder if it was more like The Children of Men adaptation. Then I started to get frustrated with both storylines.
I had a lot of trouble with some of the useless changes the show implemented that didn’t advance or add to the plot. Miranda burning down the pool house made no sense. And bringing her back in the finale as the person who called the plane on the tarmac? I had accepted she was dead and connecting her to that plane served no purpose.
The book wasn’t satisfying either. The very uneventful death of the prophet after all the build up about what a despicable person he was – I wanted to know a lot more about him!
Am I being too critical? I typically read first, watch second (except for thrillers and suspense so I can actually be surprised, then get greater context from the book). What did you all think about the book and the show?

It’s a type of post apocalypse I always struggle a bit with. I call them Shakespeare apocalypse stories. Any time Shakespeare shows up after the world ends or in a dystopia, it’s probably not going to be a story I entirely mesh with.
