    So I watched Villeneuve’s Dune 2 yesterday.

From what I can gather, I don’t think I’d really enjoy the source text itself, but I enjoyed the ideas on the screen. The problem is I couldn’t engage with the story. Specifically, I really really *really* wanted more agony in Paul Atreides’ struggle: Do I remain true to myself, or do I accept a fate I cannot control?

What unfolds was not agonizing at all. It was almost comical. Spoiler: >!Some innocent birds get crisped to KFC’s quality control standards, which drives Paul to become politically savvy deathlord of the universe!<.

Which leaves me with an itch to scratch. I need to read something that does this better: rise to power, political intrigue, external circumstances more powerful than the individual, and agonizing choices.

    What do you recommend?

    1. It’s not really like Dune however it is in my opinion the best science fiction that I’ve ever read. The Hyperion Cantos is absolutely fantastic and if you haven’t read it you should do so immidiately.

FYI the book is just Dune 1, lol. The second Dune novel hasn’t been covered yet.

Why do you think the book wouldn’t suit you? Are there specifics to why you think that? What you listed is exactly what is in the book. (P1 and P2 are from the first book title just Dune)
