An enchanting book in the desert or American southwest
I love the desert and am drawn to the desert cultures, especially in Mexico/ US southwest. Are there any good books that either make this a central piece, or are at least set in that area?
(Besides Blood Meridian)
The Leaphorn and Chee series takes place on the Big Rez, encompassing Arizona, New Mexico mostly, but parts of Utah and Colorado too. The geography of the desert plays a big part in the stories, plus you can learn a lot about Navajo culture, who’ve lived in the desert for eons

The Light Years: A Memoir by Chris Rush really prominently featured the desert
It actually made me want to live in Arizona, he describes it as so otherworldly (given he was on drugs for most of the book)

A Million Heavens by John Brandon. Setting is outside of Albuquerque and the desert is basically a character.

Death Comes for the Archbishop by Willa Cather might satisfy your taste. She was a wonderful writer.
