I used to be a voracious reader, and lately I have found it difficult to keep reading. It is likely a combination of being distracted (work, life) and not having found books with hooks. So whilst I work on the distraction bit, I’d love to hear some ideas of books that are page turners and will pull me in.

I like a wide range of genres (thrillers, horror, fantasy, sci-fi, adventure) but I am open to trying other genres (maybe that is what I need). I have been plodding through “The Passage” (Justin Cronin) which started strong, and then a third of the way in it loses me with forgettable characters, so-so writing. Prior to that I enjoyed Ken Follet’s “Never” which wasn’t the best book, but at least kept me gripped; “Gone Girl” (Gillian Flynn) where I liked the twists and turns (even though I had already seen the film); “Sphere” (Michael Crichton) which was tense and had a feeling of dread I enjoyed. Writers that would find their way into my Top 20, would include Terry Pratchett, Frank Herbert, Steven R Donaldson, George RR Martin, JK Rowling, Dan Brown, Douglas Adams, Khaled Hosseini. (Reading this back, what a paucity of female writers – what is that all about??).
