As someone who recently finished “The Body” (and admittedly took a longer time to do so than I should have because of how busy I’ve been,) I must say that King’s understanding of how the human mind works, of how people process things, is a factor in his novels being as memorable as they are. “The Body” was not my first King novel – before it, I had read “IT,” “The Shining,” “Dead Zone,” “Green Mile,” and “Misery.” As someone who has read some of his works, I have to say that his brilliant character writing is what always stands out. His characters (*especially* in “Misery” and “The Body”) feel like real people. “The Body” is a masterpiece, particularly as the book reaches its end – there is a scene wherein a character has a dream and god the metaphors, the symbolism… even the story’s second to last chapter, I was astounded whilst reading this story because I always walk away from his novels wishing that I knew people who were as intriguing as the characters he comes up with. “The Body” isn’t even a horror novel, and yet it frightened me so very much at certain points due to the way King defines the atmosphere and setting, due to how real Gordie LaChance and Chris Chambers feel.

I think that opening bit of The Body about our secret hearts is the best piece of writing he’s done.
