I’m looking for a book about two people who absolutely should not be together, who tear each other down in the worst ways possible, who are as inimical to each other as arsenic – yet are absolutely addicted to each other, completely non-functional when separated, and can only breathe the same air as the other.

As Meat Loves Salt by Maria McCann is basically the M/M version of this. It’s a historical novel about an incredibly fucked up man who meets another man, and how they basically ruin each other’s lives. But also there’s a mutual obsession and romance that makes you forget how awful it all is. The writing is gorgeous, but it’s a pretty heavy read. There is a >!rape scene, and a lot of period-typical discussions of rape and homophobia!< that I would give a TW for.
