    Spoiler tag just in case.
This question isn’t “popular books you hated” it’s for books you didn’t know were popular till after you read them.

I didn’t know about Fahrenheit 451 until I had to read it for school. Everyone hated it. The first few chapters were good but most of the book felt poorly written. I couldn’t believe how many people liked it outside of my class.

“The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” is the book I HATE the most. Every word of this book was torture. Had to finish it for a report though. Would never recommend it to anyone. Actually shocked to see people enjoyed this book. After finishing the book I looked up reviews. One of the negative reviews said it “felt unethical” which I describes how I feel about it pretty well.

Give me your rants. I love reading them. What books made you surprised people liked?

    1. Multiple works by Brandon Sanderson.

Each time, I was reading the opening chapter using a web site that serves up random book openings, intentionally omitting the book title and author. The site offers content from both commercial, traditionally published works and indie works.

Each time I read one of his opening chapters, I was convinced it was a (rather unskilled) amateur author. Turns out I absolutely _loathe_ his writing. Whatever he might accomplish on a larger scale in his books (magic systems, world building, etc.), it’s lost on me. I can’t slog through his sentence-by-sentence writing.

    2. The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. I read it and thought it was soooo bad. But so many people love the book. I really doubt myself in these cases, because I think I just don’t get it maybe. I just found the writing really obnoxious and arrogant?

‘A Little Life’ by Hanya Yanagihara. Everyone on the internet loved this one but I couldn’t just read it. Maybe it’s the way it’s written or it just didn’t appeal to me.

    4. Normal People – I only bought it because of the cover and knew nothing about the book. I didn’t like the writing style and the main characters really annoyed me. They seemed so unrealistic to me. I only found out later how popular the book is and that so many people sympathise with them.

    5. Let’s bring out a Coleen Hoover baby – It Ends With Us. Lol.

It’s not that I hate these books. I know this is controversial, and I’m a part of these fandoms. But I would say I didn’t have as much love for the Harry Potter series or the ASOIAF series like a lot of people seem to.

      Norwegian Wood

I read it a long time ago but it seems like it was just of the protagonist’s wet dream coming to life. Every woman and everyone else in the book just seems to do everything to make his life fun and easy
