My niece is a kid with a hard shell, to say the least, but I have seen her soft side and I want to gift her a book that will help her with her relationships with other kids in the future.
I was thinking of “big wolf & little wolf ” by Nadine Brun-Cosme .
Do you have any other suggestions?

I think her interests are more relevant than her disposition when it comes to reading tastes. You can get her a book with any moral in the world, and it won’t stick unless she’s genuinely engaged. Figure out what she likes, and then go from there. Nearly every children’s book has a moral in it, so you should be able to find a book that’s both interesting and demonstrates the traits you want to encourage in her.
I’m not sure if this may come off preachy but The Naughtiest Girl series by Enid Blyton can be an option. The main character starts off as rude, impatient and childish but grows up through various events. You can check out the summaries on Wikipedia 🙂
What about Beverly Cleary’s Ramona books?
I think if I was a “hard-shelled” little girl, I would like to read the perspective of someone who feels misunderstood. The way I remember Ramona is her sort of barreling through life and reacting to things from her limited POV; your niece might relate to her.
The phantom toll booth is pretty good. It got me permanently reading.
Maybe The Clementine series or the Clarice Bean series
The Secret Garden
Mandy! Every 8 year old child loves Mandy. I have given it as a gift to many different kinds of children and it’s just very very nourishing. Highly recommend.
