Zechariah 3:1-2, this takes place in a courtroom

“Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the Angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right hand to accuse him. And the Lord said to Satan, ‘The Lord rebuke you, O Satan! The Lord who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is not this a brand plucked from the fire?'”

In this part of the Bible, Satan is condemning Joshua and calling him all sorts of things similar to with the opening scene where the judge condemns the reverend, in the end though, the lord is the ultimate judge and he says to Satan basically, “Back off man.”

    Another example is with Job:

    Job 1:6-12:
“Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them. The LORD said to Satan, ‘From where have you come?’ Satan answered the LORD and said, ‘From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking up and down on it.’ And the LORD said to Satan, ‘Have you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, who fears God and turns away from evil?’ Then Satan answered the LORD and said, ‘Does Job fear God for no reason? Have you not put a hedge around him and his house and all that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. But stretch out your hand and touch all that he has, and he will curse you to your face.’ And the LORD said to Satan, ‘Behold, all that he has is in your hand. Only against him do not stretch out your hand.’ So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD.”

In this part, as most know, Satan is saying that Job only praises God because his life is awesome but if you took away all his stuff he would hate god. So god basically says, “bet. Do all you want to him. Just don’t kill him.”

Satan doesn’t talk much in the Bible but I have to say he kind of sounds like the judge. McCarthy’s writing as a whole sounds like the Bible too.

One opinion I have is that I wish McCarthy wasn’t so doom and gloom in his writings and offered some sort of retribution or balancing for characters like Judge Holden who appear infallible. I saw one person say that the judge exists in a sort of fallen world where he does very good in but it’s just unrealistic in my opinion because evil and goodness are always at war.

What do you guys think about the judge being the devil and why do you think the devil is historically steeped in logic and reason? Why do you think the judge wasn’t killed?

My opinion are that the judge is definitely the devil and he’s steeped in logic and reason because the principal sin of the Bible is pride and it’s very easy to become prideful if you are smart. I think the Judge wasn’t killed because it was a personal choice by McCarthy. Realistically, it wouldn’t have played out that way.

Yeah, did you know that Satan in Hebrew is literally “accuser” or “adversary”? So it’s not always (especially in the Old Testament) intended as a proper noun, more describing the function of that spiritual being.

Interesting points you bring up about pride, since god punished humans for making the Tower of Babel because they were getting more similar/sophisticated to gods. She didn’t want them working together, gaining knowledge like in the garden. She just wants to be entertained by her human ants. So god is allowed to sin/be prideful
