So my TikTok fyp decided to influence my reading taste (fantasy, literary fiction, thriller) to read books by Russian authors.
Well the aesthetic of the videos seemed fun and classy, with relatable characters/quotes (yes I’m concerned) so why not give a shot to Dostoevsky?
Humm the only book I was able to finish is “white nights” oops.
I tried “Crime and Punishment” and although the beginning was fairly interesting I don’t know much about Russian history and English is not my first language. Loneliness is mentioned quite a lot of times which made me eager to read more about the character but then the dialogues are endless and I zoom out. Let’s not talk about the Russian names and how Dostoevsky changes to surname which naturally sounds the same to me.
I also tried “Wuthering Heights” and I’m concerned by my comprehension abilities of classic literature, so mission failed.
“Count of Monte Cristo” was also my DNF victim! I honestly don’t remember why I stopped I was pretty much enjoying it until the focus went to another character when I wanted to focus on Dantés…
But I managed to finish “Pride and Prejudice”. I tried to pretend I really loved it but when I stop to think about it is just a bunch of people going to each others houses. Well I had a hard time but the dialogues and characters were entertaining enough.
I might try again…while reading at the subway to look intellectual.
No offense to anyone who actually enjoys this books, I actually envy you.
The closest to classic that I read and enjoy a lot is Haruki Murakami.
