I am such a sucker for Red Dead Redemption 2, where the world just breathes the Western world. Not so much history based, but aesthetically. The saloons, the shops with swinging doors, the bars, the poker playing, the trains, the horse rides through the open world, I love it so much.

Is there any Western book that really captures an alive town of cowboys? I’ve read Lonesome Dove, which is one of my favourite books of all time, and I loved the cowboy feel to it too. So maybe i’ve read the best already, but if there are other description heavy books that transport you to a bustling Western era, please let me know!

I finally completed RDR2 a few months ago after being able to play it on Steamdeck. I also read Lonseome Dove during.

I went down a Cormac McCarthy rabbit hole after that. I went All the pretty horses and No Country for Old Men. Not traditional westerns but had something of the vibe to them. I’d read it before, but I guess Blood Meridian is the obvious one. Following a bunch of outlaws, albeit far less likeable than Dutch and the gang.

No real recommendations, just nice to see a kindred spirit and post so I can come back and see what recommendations people come up with.
