I don’t think I’ve read a book for about 10 years honestly.
School put me off reading as it felt like I HAD to do it instead of reading for enjoyment.
I’d love to get back into reading, starting with short stories. I’m open to any suggestions really, tell me what books helped you get back into the swing of things?

What genres of other media do you like?
I’m a big short story person myself, but I tend to gravitate towards folklore and sci-fi.
This is how you lose the time war
Relatively short (I binged it in just one evening) but very sweet sci-fi romance.
I was the same way. I hated reading when I was a kid, now I read all the time and it’s my passion! 🤓📖✨
What started me off was Harry Potter. It helped that I already loved the movies so giving the books a go was a no-brainer. It just escalated from there.😅
So what movies do you like? See if it’s based on a book and give it a go.
Check out Philip K. Dick’s sci-fi short stories. They are some of the most immersive works I’ve read. Each story is so unique and the worlds he builds are beautiful and interesting: [https://www.amazon.ca/Philip-K-Dick-MEGAPACK-Classic-ebook/dp/B00C6EXNRA](https://www.amazon.ca/Philip-K-Dick-MEGAPACK-Classic-ebook/dp/B00C6EXNRA)
If you like folklore and are open to YA try some of the best sellers like:
The Cruel Prince by Holly Black
An Enchantment of Ravens by Margaret Rogerson
The Call by Peadar O’Guilin
The Wicked Deep by Shea Ernshaw
Or fast paced Sci Fi like
Rolling in the Deep by Mira Grant (short Sci Fi horror prequel)
Dead Silence by SA Barnes
Alive by Scott Sigler
In another comment, you mentioned you’d like something historical. For that, I would recommend The Book Thief. It’s set in late 1930s early 1940s nazi Germany and follows a young adopted girl, Liesel Meminger.
My advice is to start with fiction and then brand out to other subgenres, like historical fiction or contemporary or even fantasy. Books by Sally Rooney, Ottessa Moshfegh, Ashley Audrain, and Alex Michaelides really helped me get back into the groove of things.
