A book with a worse setting than that of George Orwell’s 1984. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a book where the characters live in an oppressive and authoritarian state like Oceania or Panem from the Hunger Games. But in general a world that is unwelcoming, extremely difficult to live in, very dangerous and miserable, granting the characters very little reason to feel optimistic or hopeful about their lives and situations.

Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn series
I remember reading an awful YA book (as in, not worth reading lol) where women died at 20 and men died at 25 due to genetic engineering gone wrong. Resorted to forced polygamy to keep up the population. Wither by Lauren DeStefano
The Handmaid’s Tale
The Road
Cormac McCarthy’s *The Road*
Vigilance by Robert Jackson Bennett (it takes place in the USA in 2030, so it’s definitely not going to make you feel too optimistic)
