I have just finished reading The water knife. I think it is a good book, I have some issues with it, but I have enjoyed it. However, I have a question about a very important point of the book, and I have not been able to find an answer anywhere, so I thought that maybe somebody here has read it and can help me.
>!One of the critical points of the novel is that the water rights are kept inside the copy of a book that Ratan gives to Maria. Ratan was trying to sell these rights to the highest bidder. So, why did he offer the book to Maria? He knew that the rights were inside, and he even insisted several times when she refused the book. For me, that does not make any sense!<

It’s been a minute since I read this, but I think your statement that Ratan was trying to sell to the highest bidder is wrong. If I remember right, other characters assumed that, but he actually knew he was going to be double crossed. Sorry if that is vague!
