These don’t usually ruin a book for me, but every time I encounter them my eyes roll.
1.) main characters with three letter names, especially if that name starts with a V or includes an X or something. Vin, Dex, Vis. Idk why but for some reason it’s just really tacky to me. I feel like it’s the name people give characters when they want them to be edgy or unique and want their name to sound “cool”. It just feels like a lazy default name to me.
2.) Undeserved underdog moments. By this I mean when a character (usually main character and usually at the beginning of the book) overcomes a crazy challenge against all odds and everyone is astounded and the reason is because they are special and either have a super awesome secret power or are just otherwise an exception to the magical or physical laws of the world they live in. I love an underdog story, but only when it’s an ACTUAL underdog. Not someone just randomly discovering that “actually I’m better than everyone”.
3.) Secret royalty. Similar to the underdog thing. A person is so badass and awesome despite living in the worst setting ever and needing to fight to survive and then it turns out actually they’re a secret prince and they received the best training and special magic runs through their blood. I hate secret royalty. I don’t want my main character who is poor to be a runaway prince I want them to be a runaway milk delivery man.
