I’m looking for suggestions of books to read to my 6 year old at bedtime. She’s doing great learning to read on her own and we have everything we need in that regard but I need books to read to her that will keep her attention (and mine). I recently read her the hobbit (my favorite book) and she liked it but it was a little slow at times for her. I also read her “the search for delicious” which she enjoyed as well.

We did Charlie and the Chocolate Factory when my son was five, and he loved The Hobbit.
James and the Giant Peach
[Sal and Gabi Break the Universe](https://app.thestorygraph.com/books/e2983156-c0df-4398-9a26-773e9f49b369) by Carlos Hernandez is a favorite of mine! Super heartwarming, but also so much fun.
Freddy The Pig, by Walter Brooks. Fun for both kids and the adult reading to them!
My brother liked when I read him The End of the Beginning by Avi, Warrior Cats, Nancy Drew, and The Land of Elyon Series at that age. Hope you find something you both enjoy!
The Mysterious Benedict Society series.
Alan Ahlberg’s poetry books and Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes
My mom read the Marry Poppins books to me when I was a girl and I loved them!
I would recommend the Narnia-series. Itˋs faster paced than “The Hobbit“.
The Junie B. Jones series!
Magic treehouse books
Skunk and Badger is awesome
There are some great suggestions here! A few others to consider from the past few years:
Facts v. Opinions v. Robots by Michael Rex
Operation: Frog Effect by Sara Scheerger
The Last Fifth Grade of Emerson Elementary by Laura Shovan
Saucy by Cynthia Kadohata
Kit and Caleb by Beth Vrabel
Maybe some Captain Underpants or Diary of a Wimpy Kid?
Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein is an oldy but a goody!
I hope you find some great reads to share with your kid!
Depending on the kind of child your daughter is, I’d recommend the Lemony Snicket series. And there are 13 (I think) of them for endless crazy fun!
Perhaps read a few chapters yourself to see if you think she would enjoy it. If she’s particularly sensitive or easily unsettled I would give them a miss, but if she’s the mischievous adventurous type then I’d give them a try.
I started reading How to Train Your Dragon to my kid when they were six, it’s one of my favourite memories. It’s hilarious and the fits of giggles are etched in my mind forever. It is always one of the first books I gift for a child.
Also the BFG if only for the Human Beans line which also resulted in absolute fits.
Edited to add The Faraway Tree for the same reason – My kid LOVED Saucepan Man.
